About volatile substance use
There is continuing concern about the misuse of volatile substances in Western Australia, particularly when used by young people. Volatile substance use (VSU) is a dangerous practice which can have devastating effects on the user, their families and communities.
The extent of VSU in Western Australia is difficult to determine, however it has been identified as an issue of concern in some regional towns and communities and some parts of metropolitan Perth. While the overall number of volatile substance users may not be large, it can have a disproportionate effect on a community.
VSU tends to be cyclical, episodic and highly localised in nature with differing trends emerging over time. VSU occurs across pockets of metropolitan, regional and remote communities, and includes both non Aboriginal and Aboriginal people.
